Dotcom Chronicles, Side Story 2: Code Is Due Out "Any Time Now"
In 1992 CERN's website said the code for Xanadu was due out "any time now." Ted Nelson's hypertext system, with links that never break and royalties by the byte, was promised in 18 months in 1988, released as code in 1999 and made clickable in 2014. Following Nelson from his idea in 1960 to 2026, this piece asks why it never got built.
Dotcom Chronicles (3): You Can't Set Up a System of Bidirectional Links
In 1991 the hypertext experts said the Web's links went one way and could break at any time. Berners-Lee knew what they wanted; he had built the two-way kind himself in 1980. His letters on the mailing list in 1992 and 1993 explain why he built links that break anyway, and what he put in their place.
